Updated March 28, 2026 — A 12-ton shipment of Nestle KitKat bars — 413,793 pieces from the brand’s new chocolate range — was reported stolen last week while being transported between production and distribution sites in Europe, the company told AFP.
Nestle said the lorry had departed a factory in central Italy and was en route to Poland when the load disappeared; both the vehicle and its cargo remain missing. A company spokesperson noted they have long encouraged people to “have a break” with KitKat, but added that someone appears to have taken that slogan very literally by making off with more than 12 tonnes of chocolate.
Investigations are under way with local authorities and supply-chain partners. Nestle warned the loss could create temporary shortages on shop shelves and make it harder for customers to find KitKats ahead of Easter. The company also cautioned that the bars might surface through unofficial sales channels across various European markets.
Each bar is traceable via a unique batch code. Nestle said scanners that detect matching codes will receive clear instructions on how to notify KitKat, and the company will then handle the evidence and follow up with authorities as appropriate.
