More than 100 homes were damaged after a tornado touched down in a residential area outside Houston on Monday, authorities said. No injuries were reported.
Photos and drone video posted on Facebook by the Harris County Precinct 3 constable showed roofs with shingles ripped off and debris blocking roads. The damage affected the Memorial Northwest neighborhood, the office of Constable Mark Herman said.
The Houston Fire Department sent five members of its saw team to cut up and remove toppled trees, spokesperson Rustin Rawlings said.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for southeastern Texas, including Houston, through 1 a.m. Tuesday and also posted a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the region. The NWS will survey the area to assign an official rating to the Harris County tornado.
Meteorologists noted the atmosphere was favorable for tornadic development: unusually warm, humid conditions for late November with daytime temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s and dew points into the low 70s, combined with lifting from both a warm front and a cold front moving through the state. Those factors led to multiple tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings during the day.
Conditions are expected to improve over the next few days, with rain and storms forecast to return this weekend.
