Director Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead of apparent stab wounds in their Los Angeles home, police said, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities.
Los Angeles Police Department officials said officers responded to a call to the residence Wednesday evening after concerns were raised about the couple’s welfare. When first responders entered the home, they discovered both victims and pronounced them dead at the scene. A spokesperson for the LAPD said investigators were treating the deaths as homicides; the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies to confirm causes and times of death.
No arrests had been announced early Thursday, and investigators were continuing to canvass the neighborhood, interview potential witnesses and review surveillance footage from the area. Detectives asked anyone with information, including anyone who saw suspicious activity near the home, to contact the LAPD or the department’s homicide division tip line.
There was no immediate statement from the couple’s family or from any representatives. Reiner, a veteran filmmaker and actor, is known for directing films including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally… and A Few Good Men, and for his longtime involvement in political activism. The identity of his wife has not been released by authorities pending family notification, according to police.
Neighbors described the area as quiet and said they were shocked by the news. A nearby resident who asked not to be named said they had seen increased police presence and crime-scene activity overnight. Law enforcement officials said the investigation remained active and that details would be released as they become available.
The LAPD urged the public to avoid speculation while the probe continues. Anyone with information related to the case was asked to call the LAPD or submit tips anonymously through local crime-stopping resources.
