Chaos erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner after a suspect charged a security checkpoint, prompting memories of the 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania, shooting. Dan Scavino Jr., White House deputy chief of staff, said on social media he “never thought I’d be hitting the ground again after Butler, Pennsylvania,” and called the night’s events “terrible memories,” adding he was thankful everyone in attendance was okay.
Authorities say the suspect opened fire at a checkpoint but was stopped by Secret Service personnel. Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran praised his agents, saying they “performed admirably” and that the incident demonstrated the effectiveness of the agency’s multi-layered protective posture. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn called the suspect a coward who “underestimated the protective capabilities of the U.S. Secret Service” and noted the strength of layered security and assistance from law enforcement partners.
Law enforcement identified the suspect as Cole Allen of Torrance, California. Officials briefed on the investigation say Allen is believed to have booked a room at the Washington Hilton in early April. Multiple agencies, including the FBI and a SWAT team, gathered near an address in Torrance late Saturday in connection with the case.
Investigators report Allen is declining to answer questions but allegedly made some reference to targeting administration officials without specifying names. Officials also said he mentioned that he works as a tutor in California. Images and video from the scene show Secret Service and other officers responding quickly to secure the area and apprehend the suspect at first contact.
The Butler reference recalls an apparent assassination attempt in July 2024 when a gunman fired at then-candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler. That prior attack heightens sensitivity around security at high-profile political events.
Authorities continue to investigate motive, the suspect’s background, and the weapons involved. The Secret Service and partner agencies are reviewing security protocols and the incident timeline while officials work to confirm details about the suspect’s planning and any possible associates.
