Search and rescue crews in Montana’s Glacier National Park have located the body of a hiker who had been reported missing, park officials said Thursday. The remains were discovered Wednesday about 2.5 miles up the Mt. Brown Trail, roughly 50 feet off the path in a densely wooded area with downed timber.
Park officials said the hiker’s injuries appear consistent with a bear encounter. Wildlife and law enforcement personnel were at the scene to assess recent bear activity and evaluate any ongoing public safety concerns. The portion of the Mt. Brown Trail where the body was found remains closed while the investigation continues.
The National Park Service said it will not release the victim’s name until three days after next-of-kin have been notified. The agency had been searching for a man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who had been hiking and had not been heard from since Sunday night.
Officials described the inquiry as ongoing and urged visitors to follow trail closures and guidance from park staff while investigators and wildlife specialists complete their work.
