Gunfire erupted early Sunday at a bar in Austin, Texas, killing at least three people, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said. Officers at the scene shot and killed the suspected shooter.
Fourteen other people were taken to hospitals, Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said, and three were in critical condition. Paramedics received the initial call at 1:59 a.m., and first responders arrived in under a minute.
There was no immediate information on the suspect’s identity or a motive, Davis said. She credited a heavy police presence in Austin’s entertainment district as bars were closing for the swift response. “Officers immediately transitioned … and were faced with the individual with a gun,” she said. “Three of our officers returned fire, killing the suspect.”
Davis called the incident “tragic, tragic.” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed sympathy for the victims and praised first responders, saying their rapid actions “definitely saved lives.” Federal law enforcement agencies are assisting the ongoing investigation.
