Gunfire rang out at a bar in Austin, Texas, early Sunday, killing at least three people, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said. The shooter was killed by officers at the scene.
Fourteen others were hospitalized, with three in critical condition, Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said. Paramedics got the call at 1:59 a.m., and first responders were on scene in less than a minute.
There was no immediate word on the shooter’s identity or motive. Davis said a heavy police presence in Austin’s entertainment district as bars were closing allowed officers to respond quickly. “Officers immediately transitioned … and were faced with the individual with a gun,” she said. “Three of our officers returned fire, killing the suspect.”
Davis called the shooting “tragic, tragic.” Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said his heart goes out to the victims and praised the swift response of first responders: “They definitely saved lives,” he said. Federal law enforcement is assisting the investigation.
