Clearwater, FL (33756) — A Clearwater man was taken into custody after allegedly punching an Aldi customer who was shopping with a service dog at the Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard store. Surveillance video from the store shows what police describe as an unprovoked strike that caused facial injuries to the victim.
Clearwater Police say the suspect has been booked into the Pinellas County Jail and a bail hearing is pending. The injured shopper was treated at a local hospital and released the same day; they are now recovering at home.
“Violence toward anyone—especially a person with a disability—is unacceptable,” Sgt. Mark Allen said. Chief Daniel Slaughter urged people to remain aware in public places and to report aggressive behavior immediately.
Authorities ask anyone with additional information or video to contact Clearwater Police. Tip line: (727) 562-4242. Victim resources are available, including the Victim Support Helpline: 1-800-273-TALK.
Local shopper Lisa Trent, who frequents the store, said, “It’s shocking. We shop there every weekend—this feels too close to home.”
