Delta Air Lines is boosting fees for checked luggage as jet fuel prices climb amid tensions with Iran. The carrier said the change, which it attributed to “evolving global conditions and industry dynamics,” takes effect Wednesday.
Under the new fee schedule for domestic and some short-haul international flights, the first and second checked bags will each cost $10 more, while the charge for a third checked bag jumps by $50. The revised rates are: first bag $45, second bag $55, and third bag $200. Long-haul international checked-bag fees are unchanged.
Some travelers remain exempt from these charges, including Delta SkyMiles Medallion members, passengers flying in first class and other eligible customers who continue to receive complimentary checked bags.
Other U.S. carriers have made similar moves. Southwest Airlines this week raised its first-bag fee from $35 to $45 and its second-bag fee from $45 to $55. United and JetBlue implemented increases earlier, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.
Airlines are trying to blunt rising fuel costs by pushing up fares and, in some cases, adding fuel surcharges. Industry analysts warn the impact could be large: Deutsche Bank estimates that if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed and jet fuel averaged $2 more per gallon for a year, carriers would need to raise fares by about 17% — roughly $50 on average — to offset the extra expense.
Jet fuel prices have already risen sharply. The International Air Transport Association said jet fuel averaged $209 a barrel for the week ending April 3, an increase of 132% compared with last year.
Travel experts advise consumers booking upcoming trips to consider refundable fares or flexible tickets in case prices and fees rise further.
