A Canadian National Railway train derailed early Saturday north of Warroad in Roseau County, the sheriff’s office said. The incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. and involved 42 railcars, including two that the Federal Railroad Administration lists as carrying dangerous goods — a category that can include energy products, chemicals, hazardous wastes and radioactive materials.
A CN spokesperson told Sheriff Steve Gust there were no reported leaks, injuries or fires, and crossings were not affected. As a precaution, officials established an evacuation zone along Highway 313 from 400th Street to County Road 137. The Patch Motel on State Avenue in Warroad was opened to provide shelter for anyone displaced.
Hazardous materials teams were conducting leak checks and monitoring air quality Saturday afternoon, and officials reported no environmental concerns. First responders and CN personnel are working to clear and clean the site; officials estimated that could take two to three days. CN said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
Several railcars from the train lay off the tracks north of Warroad, according to Roseau County Sheriff Steve Gust.
