Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday to rename Palm Beach International Airport the President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The airport, which President Donald Trump uses when traveling to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, would take the new name under the measure passed by the Florida House and Senate in February.
DeSantis’ office said the bill states that Palm Beach International Airport “shall be renamed as the ‘President Donald J. Trump International Airport,'” subject to Federal Aviation Administration administrative actions and any applicable rights agreements. The law is scheduled to take effect July 1, according to the state legislature.
The FAA told ABC News that changing an airport’s name is a local matter and that it does not approve name changes, but the agency must complete administrative tasks such as updating navigational charts and databases.
ABC News contacted the White House and DeSantis’ office for comment. Eric Trump posted on X that he was “Proud to have played a small role in making this happen,” thanking DeSantis, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and others; White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller reposted Eric Trump’s message.
The airport renaming follows a broader pattern of efforts by Trump to have public buildings and infrastructure renamed after himself, including a recent renaming of the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center — a change that appears to require congressional approval to be formalized — and proposals to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles Airport. ABC News previously reported that Trump discussed offering to unfreeze funding for a major New York infrastructure project in exchange for renaming efforts, according to sources familiar with the conversation.
