Former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday, hours after the university announced his termination, authorities confirmed.
Pittsfield Township police said officers responded just after 4 p.m. to a location in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road for an alleged assault. The department did not name Moore in its news release but said the incident did not appear random. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor, and the investigation is ongoing. Police said they could not release additional details at this time to protect the integrity of the probe.
Earlier Wednesday, the university said an investigation found “credible evidence” that Moore had been involved in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said Moore was “terminated with cause, effective immediately,” and called the conduct a clear violation of university policy, noting U-M’s zero-tolerance stance.
Moore served as Michigan’s head coach for the past two seasons, compiling a 16-8 record and leading the No. 18 Wolverines to a ReliaQuest Bowl victory last year. The university has named Biff Poggi as interim head coach; Poggi was previously an associate coach at Michigan before leaving to coach at Charlotte and returned to the Michigan staff in 2025.
Michigan is preparing to play No. 13 Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
