FedEx announced Tuesday it will begin offering same-day delivery by partnering with logistics firm OneRail, a move meant to keep pace with speed-focused shifts from Amazon and other retailers. Customers will be able to select either two-hour or end-of-day delivery at checkout, the company said.
Under the plan, FedEx will match eligible orders with carriers in its nationwide network and provide tracking information for same-day shipments. The carrier said the service will cover a variety of package types, including large, oversized and specialized deliveries, though it did not provide a launch date or a list of initial markets.
Orlando-based OneRail describes itself as using artificial intelligence to optimize routing and delivery; its customers include Lowe’s and PepsiCo. OneRail did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement comes as rivals continue to push faster shipping options. Amazon has rolled out one-hour and three-hour delivery windows in many U.S. cities, while Walmart has expanded its expedited offerings to include early-morning and late-evening delivery windows.
