April 17, 2026 — Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a gearshift defect could raise crash risk. A loss of signal between the transmission range sensor and the powertrain control module can cause affected trucks to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, which could lead to a loss of vehicle control.
The recall applies to F-150s equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission built between March 12, 2014, and Aug. 18, 2017. NHTSA said drivers may see a malfunction indicator light or a wrench light on the dashboard if the transmission range sensor is malfunctioning.
Ford told regulators it is aware of one accident and two injuries possibly related to the issue. The company will begin mailing recall notification letters to owners on April 27. Owners can have the affected components updated or replaced free of charge at any Ford or Lincoln dealer.
