Gramma, a Galápagos tortoise believed to be about 141 years old, has died, park officials said. The elderly tortoise, long familiar to visitors and conservation staff in the islands, reportedly passed from natural causes after showing signs of declining mobility and appetite.
Galápagos tortoises are renowned for their exceptional lifespans, and Gramma’s estimated age made her one of the oldest known individuals of her species. Her life spanned decades of change in the islands and in conservation practices aimed at protecting native wildlife.
Officials said Gramma’s death underscores the importance of ongoing conservation and monitoring programs for Galápagos tortoises, which have faced threats from habitat loss, invasive species and human activity. Park staff plan a limited, respectful memorial and will continue efforts to protect remaining tortoise populations.
