A Canadian tourist was shot and killed Monday while visiting the Teotihuacán pyramids in Mexico, officials said.
Mexico’s Security Cabinet said a gunman opened fire at the popular archaeological site, killing a Canadian woman and injuring at least 13 people, including seven Americans. The shooter later died by suicide, the Cabinet added.
Video posted to X and verified by CBS News shows a man with a gun pacing near the top of the Pyramid of the Moon; other footage captures gunfire as visitors walk at the base of the pyramid.
Officials said at least seven people sustained gunshot wounds and at least two others were hurt from falls. Two Americans were among those shot — a 29-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman. Mexico’s Interior Ministry said eight people remained hospitalized Monday night.
Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon and ammunition at the scene, the Security Cabinet reported.
“What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us,” President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote in a statement. “I express my most sincere solidarity with the affected individuals and their families.” Sheinbaum said Mexican authorities were in contact with the Canadian embassy about the incident.
The Teotihuacán pyramids, about 30 miles north of Mexico City, are one of the country’s most important and visited archaeological sites, drawing millions of tourists each year.
