One member of the Assembly of Experts — the body that chooses the leader of the Islamic Republic — said the assembly has reached a “firm opinion” about the next leader that represents the view of the majority of its members. “An almost final decision has been reached,” Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri said in a video published by the semi-official Fars News Agency. He did not reveal who the assembly’s candidate is, saying members have been working hard but face “obstacles” due to the “difficult circumstances.” — ABC News’ Somayeh Malekian

Fires caused by strikes on oil reservoirs in Tehran on Saturday were still burning on Sunday, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. Because of the large volume of flammable material, experts say the blazes cannot be fully extinguished immediately and must be allowed to burn while conditions are managed. Tehran residents were warned to protect themselves against acid and toxic rain after the massive fire. Iran’s Environmental Protection Agency said pollutants released into Tehran’s air following recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on fuel depots have put respiratory health at risk and urged people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. The Red Crescent warned explosions at tanks released toxic compounds, including hydrocarbons and sulfur and nitrogen oxides, which could become highly dangerous and acidic if it rains, potentially causing chemical skin burns and serious lung damage.
