U.S. and Israeli forces carried out a large-scale attack on Iran on Saturday. President Trump described the operation as intended to degrade the regime’s military capabilities and to remove the risk of Iran developing a nuclear weapon. He also said Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the strikes late Saturday afternoon.
A map produced by the CBS News data team plots reported strike locations across Iran, compiled from statements by government officials and reporting by CBS News and the Associated Press.
A source involved in the Israeli operations told CBS News that Khamenei and Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, were among the initial targets in the first wave of attacks.
Iranian media reported strikes in multiple regions, including Isfahan — home to a major nuclear facility — the holy city of Qom, and cities such as Karaj, Kermanshah, Lorestan, and Tabriz.
In a video address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was focusing on military sites, including missile installations, and warned that operations would continue as long as necessary.
The Israel Defense Forces issued notices to people located in or near military-industrial plants and other military infrastructure, urging immediate evacuation until further notice and warning that remaining in those areas endangers lives.
Two U.S. officials told CBS News that the U.S. military employed Tomahawk land-attack missiles to suppress Iranian air defenses, and also used one-way attack drones during the operation.
