Winter Haven, Fla. — A mother has been arrested and charged with homicide after authorities say her 6-year-old child was found dead in woods near Cypress Gardens Boulevard.
Polk County deputies say the child’s body was discovered in the wooded area, and investigators allege the child was beaten during an altercation that began when the child touched the mother’s contact lenses. The suspect was taken into custody; charges were filed and the case remains under investigation.
Local residents and family members described the news as shocking. “I can’t believe this happened here; the kids play nearby every day,” said Maria Lopez, a neighbor. Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest and said investigators are processing the scene and collecting evidence. Sheriff Grady Judd urged parents to supervise children closely and to report any unsafe behavior immediately.
Police and the sheriff’s office have released photos of the area and portions of the incident report as part of the ongoing inquiry. An autopsy was scheduled, and authorities asked anyone with information to come forward.
