Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead Sunday in their Los Angeles home, sources told CBS News, in what police called an apparent homicide. Los Angeles police discovered two bodies inside the Brentwood residence; firefighters confirmed the discovery and paramedics were reportedly called to the scene around 3:40 p.m. Detectives from the LAPD Robbery‑Homicide Division have been assigned to the investigation. The Los Angeles mayor’s office and the California governor’s office both confirmed the deaths. Witnesses reported a large police presence at the Reiner home Sunday evening.
Reiner, 78, was an award‑winning actor, director, producer, writer and political activist. He rose to nationwide prominence for his role as Michael Stivic — “Meathead” — on the CBS sitcom All in the Family, winning two Emmy Awards for his performance. He later became a noted director, responsible for films including Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men; his films earned one Academy Award nomination and multiple Golden Globe nominations. In recent weeks he spoke with Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes about a remake of his 1984 directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap.
Reiner devoted significant time to political activism, including co‑founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which fought California’s ban on gay marriage. Rob Reiner was 78; Michele Reiner was 68. The couple had three adult children. Carissa Lawson reports.
