Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead Sunday in their Los Angeles home, sources told CBS News, in what police described as an apparent homicide. Los Angeles police discovered two bodies inside the Brentwood residence; firefighters confirmed the discovery. Paramedics were reportedly called to the scene at about 3:40 p.m. Detectives from the LAPD Robbery‑Homicide Division have been assigned to the investigation. The offices of the Los Angeles mayor and the California governor both confirmed the deaths. Witnesses reported a heavy police presence at the property Sunday evening.
Reiner, 78, was an award‑winning actor, director, producer, writer and political activist. He became widely known for his portrayal of Michael Stivic — nicknamed “Meathead” — on the CBS sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards. He later established himself as a director with films such as Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men; his work received an Academy Award nomination and multiple Golden Globe nominations. In recent weeks he spoke with Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes about a remake of his 1984 directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap.
A committed activist, Reiner co‑founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged California’s ban on same‑sex marriage. Rob Reiner was 78; Michele Reiner was 68. The couple are survived by three adult children. Carissa Lawson reports.
