Los Angeles police said director Rob Reiner and his wife were found dead of apparent stab wounds in their Los Angeles home, and the case is being investigated as a homicide.
Officers responded Wednesday evening after concerns were raised about the couple’s welfare. When first responders entered the residence they found both victims and pronounced them dead at the scene. The LAPD said investigators are treating the deaths as homicides and that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner will perform autopsies to determine cause and time of death.
No arrests had been reported early Thursday. Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood, interviewing potential witnesses and reviewing nearby surveillance footage as the probe remained active. Authorities asked anyone who saw suspicious activity near the home or who has information to contact the LAPD or the department’s homicide tip line.
There was no immediate statement from the couple’s family or representatives. Reiner, a longtime filmmaker and actor, directed films including This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally… and A Few Good Men and has been active in political causes. Police said the identity of his wife has not been released pending family notification.
Neighbors described the area as quiet and said they were shocked by the news, noting an increased overnight police presence and crime-scene activity. The LAPD urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues and to submit tips, including anonymously through local crime-stopping resources.
