A security guard who was killed during a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday has been widely praised for his bravery and credited with preventing a larger loss of life. Three men died in the attack, including the armed guard. Two suspected shooters were later found dead inside a vehicle near the mosque.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or identified the two suspected gunmen. The FBI said the suspects were teenagers. Federal and local investigators are probing the incident; San Diego police are treating it as a possible hate crime while the inquiry continues.
People who knew the security guard described him as a devoted father of eight and recalled his kindness and generosity. Mayte Gutierrez, a former employee of the Islamic Center’s attached school, told reporters the guard’s actions and devotion to his community saved lives. Parents and community members said he routinely welcomed anyone who approached the center, whether a child, an elderly person or someone in need.
The mosque’s imam, Taha Hassane, confirmed in a social media post that the school connected to the Islamic Center remained safe, including all children and staff. He later asked the public to respect the privacy of the victims and their families while officials continue to investigate.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said the guard helped contain the situation before officers arrived and called his actions heroic. Officers found all three victims in front of the mosque when they reached the scene; shortly afterward they located the two deceased suspects in a vehicle nearby.
Sam Hamideh, a parent who knew the guard through the center, emphasized the man’s welcoming nature and willingness to help anyone who came by. Community leaders and officials have expressed gratitude for his sacrifice and for the protection he provided that morning.
Mayor Todd Gloria said the city would increase police presence at houses of worship following the shooting to better anticipate and prevent similar attacks. The incident comes amid rising concerns about violence at religious sites both in the United States and abroad.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and seek answers about motive and the circumstances that led to the shooting.
