A Canadian woman was shot dead and at least 13 people were injured Monday at the Teotihuacán archaeological site, Mexican officials said. Mexico’s Security Cabinet reported that a gunman opened fire at the popular pyramid complex, killing the tourist and wounding others; the shooter later took his own life.
Video posted to X and verified by CBS News shows a man armed with a gun pacing near the summit of the Pyramid of the Moon, and other clips capture gunfire as visitors walked at the base of the structure.
Officials said seven people suffered gunshot wounds and at least two others were hurt after falling. Among the wounded were seven U.S. citizens, including a 29-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman who were shot. Mexico’s Interior Ministry said eight people remained hospitalized Monday night.
Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon and ammunition at the scene, the Security Cabinet added.
President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a statement saying the events in Teotihuacán cause deep sorrow and expressing solidarity with the victims and their families. Sheinbaum said Mexican authorities had communicated with the Canadian embassy about the incident.
Located about 30 miles north of Mexico City, the Teotihuacán pyramids are among Mexico’s most visited archaeological sites, attracting millions of tourists each year. Mexican authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
