The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee is sending its largest Winter Olympic team to the 2026 Games in Italy: 232 Olympic athletes whose listed hometowns span 32 U.S. states. The CBS News data team mapped athletes’ home states to identify which states and communities provide the most representation on Team USA.
Top states by number of athletes
– Colorado leads with 30 athletes.
– Minnesota follows with 24.
– California sends 19 athletes.
At the other end of the spectrum, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, North Dakota and Washington, D.C. each have one athlete on the roster. Eighteen states have no athletes listed on this Olympic team. Three athletes on the roster list hometowns outside the United States (New Zealand, Canada and Ukraine). Three alternate athletes are not included in the official count.
Veteran presence and youth pathways
Ninety-eight athletes on the roster are returning Olympians; together they have won 22 Olympic gold medals. Thirty-two athletes previously competed at the Youth Olympic Games, and 20 of those are making their full Olympic debuts in 2026.
This 232-athlete roster exceeds the 228 Americans who competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.
Hometowns with the most Olympians
A community-level map highlights U.S. hometowns for Team USA. Park City, Utah, stands out with 11 athletes — the most of any single town. Other communities with high representation include Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Lake Placid, New York; and Anchorage, Alaska. Use the search box in the table beneath the map to see whether any athletes come from your hometown.
