Golf star Tiger Woods was charged with driving under the influence after his Land Rover was involved in a rollover crash Friday afternoon in Jupiter, Florida, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said.
According to the sheriff, a pickup truck towing a small trailer was pulling into a driveway when its driver saw a Land Rover approaching at what the truck driver described as high speed. Investigators did not provide an exact speed for the Land Rover; the area’s speed limit is 30 mph. Budensiek said Woods swerved to avoid a collision, clipped the rear of the trailer, flipped onto the driver’s side and slid along the roadway before coming to rest. The vehicle did not completely overturn, the sheriff added.
Woods, 50, exited the vehicle by crawling out the passenger side. Neither driver was injured, and there were no other passengers in Woods’ car.
Budensiek said Woods displayed signs of impairment and completed several roadside tests. He took a breath test and, the sheriff said, “blew triple zeroes,” but refused to provide a urine sample. Medical personnel on scene told investigators they believed Woods was not impaired by alcohol and suspected some type of medication or drug, Budensiek said. Deputies reported no drugs or medication were found inside the vehicle.
Woods was arrested and charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Under Florida law, he was held in the Martin County Jail for eight hours beginning at 3 p.m. local time and was not placed with the general jail population. He was released on bail late Friday night, authorities and The Associated Press reported.
Jupiter Island police initially responded to the crash and requested assistance from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Budensiek said. The Martin County Fire Rescue Department said it responded to a motor vehicle crash in the Jupiter Island area around 1:30 p.m. but cited patient-privacy rules and declined to release additional information.
Woods had played in a match at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens on Tuesday. The 15-time major champion has been considering whether to play in the Masters in April. He underwent his seventh back surgery in September 2025 and suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in March 2025.
The incident adds to a history of high-profile crashes and DUI-related matters involving Woods. In 2021, he was seriously injured in a Los Angeles rollover crash in which authorities later reported his SUV traveled several hundred feet and flipped multiple times; investigators said speed — 84–87 mph in a 45 mph zone — was the primary cause. In 2017, Woods was arrested on a DUI charge in Florida after police found him asleep at the wheel; he later said he had taken an adverse mix of prescription painkillers.
