President Donald Trump announced an extension of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and said he is not operating under “time pressure” to complete a deal with Iran, while warning Americans to expect higher gas prices “for a little while.”
Ceasefire and diplomatic steps
– After declaring the extension, Trump said he hopes there will be roughly three weeks of “no firing” between Israel and Lebanon. He cautioned that Hezbollah remains a concern and said the U.S. will work with Lebanon to “get things straightened out.”
– Trump said he expects both the president of Lebanon and the prime minister of Israel to visit the White House “over the next couple of weeks,” though he did not provide dates. He said direct, ambassador-level peace talks between Israel and Lebanon will take place at the White House and that he will greet each delegation on arrival.
– He added he hopes the Israel-Lebanon dispute can be “worked out simultaneously with what we’re doing in Iran.”
Iran negotiations and oil comments
– Speaking from the Oval Office flanked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, Trump told reporters he is not in a hurry to strike a deal with Iran. When asked how long he was willing to wait, he said, “Don’t rush me.”
– Trump argued that Iran, not the U.S., faces time pressure. “You know who’s under time pressure? They are. Because if they don’t get their oil moving, their whole oil infrastructure is going to explode. You know what that means, because they have no place to store it,” he said.
– On consumer fuel costs, Trump warned Americans to expect a temporary rise in gas prices “for a little while.”
