CBS News Chief Washington Analyst Robert Costa spoke with President Trump by phone Saturday. The president said he was somewhat surprised that Iran’s retaliatory actions have been more limited than the United States and its allies anticipated, while warning the situation remains fluid.
When asked what might happen next and whether diplomacy is possible, Mr. Trump said he believes the recent strikes could move Iran closer to a negotiated outcome that he views as beneficial for the region and for the U.S., arguing that Iran has been sustaining heavy damage.
On the question of leadership in Iran after the killing of the ayatollah, Mr. Trump said he has been briefed about shakeups within Iran’s hierarchy but declined to identify who is now in charge, saying he knows but would not disclose the name. He added there are several potential leaders who could take control in the coming weeks if talks advance.
Costa also raised Congress’s role. Mr. Trump said he is willing to work with lawmakers, but stressed that on this matter—and others—he is prepared to use his executive authority to address what he perceives as threats to the United States.
