Over the weekend U.S. and Israeli forces continued strikes linked to the widening confrontation with Iran. The Israeli military told CBS News it has neutralized roughly 70% of Iran’s ballistic missile launchers, while Iran carried out a series of retaliatory attacks on targets across the Gulf.
Kuwait reported that multiple drones struck its main international airport; authorities said there were no casualties. New information also emerged about an Iranian strike on a Saudi base that injured at least 12 American service members. Images circulating online appear to show wreckage consistent with an AWACS surveillance aircraft, though the Pentagon has not confirmed that assessment.
The first contingent of U.S. Marines arrived in the region in recent days, giving American commanders additional operational options. U.S. officials have said ground troops are not required to meet their objectives in Iran, but Iranian leaders warned that any invasion would see U.S. forces “set on fire.” A senior Iranian official additionally accused Washington of publicly signaling willingness to negotiate while “secretly plotting a ground attack.”
Retired Israeli General Amir Avivi told CBS News he believes the Iranian regime could ultimately surrender; if it does not, he predicted Israel and the U.S. would keep up strikes and might support internal opponents seeking to topple the government by providing air cover.
Back in Tel Aviv, hundreds protested the campaign against Iran. Police described one demonstration as illegal and said at least 13 people were arrested.
Analysts and officials warn that the human and economic toll of the conflict is growing. Health organizations have reported thousands of deaths in the region since the crisis escalated, and markets have seen rising energy prices and volatility tied to the fighting.
CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reported from Tel Aviv on the continuing exchanges of strikes, visible damage at bases and airports across the Gulf, and the widening regional and global implications as U.S. and allied forces press their campaign while Iran conducts retaliatory attacks.
