Artemis II is scheduled to splash down about 50 miles off the coast of San Diego at roughly 8:07 PM Eastern (5:07 PM Pacific). Orion will begin atmospheric entry near 400,000 feet and take about 13 minutes to descend to the ocean.
Recovery teams will open the capsule, extract the four astronauts and move them into the recovery area aboard the USS John P. Bertha, the Navy ship positioned to meet them. Onboard the ship the crew will receive immediate medical checks and initial postflight care.
If the astronauts pass those evaluations, they will fly from the ship to a Navy base in San Diego and then transfer to another flight to the Johnson Space Center in Houston for more thorough medical exams and debriefings.
The Orion capsule will be lifted onto the USS John P. Bertha and returned to the Navy base. Recovery teams will complete equipment retrieval and mission debriefs, then provide a public update — timing dependent on how long operations take, either early Saturday morning or later in the afternoon.
