A 39-year-old woman and a dog were killed and three other people were stabbed in a road rage incident on the outer belt of the Washington D.C. beltway on Sunday, Virginia State Police said. The suspect was later killed by police.
State police were called to Interstate 495 southbound near exit 52 in Annandale, Virginia, about 1:20 p.m. for a reported road rage incident. When a trooper arrived, he was confronted by a male suspect carrying a knife.
Authorities identified the suspect Monday night as 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean, Virginia. A state trooper shot Llamado in what police described as self-defense; he was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and later died.
The other stabbing victims were women ages 36, 37 and 40. All three were hospitalized with serious injuries, state police said.
Police said the stabbings followed a crash on the highway. The incident is under investigation and is not believed to be terrorism-related. The trooper who shot the suspect has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported the crash and subsequent response caused major delays on the beltway for nearly six hours; the roadway has since been reopened.
