Updated Feb. 5, 2026 — Fire crews battled a blaze at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, Wednesday night into early Thursday, prompting patient evacuations and a multiagency response. Lackawanna County Emergency Management Director Tom Taylor said 77 patients were moved to other area hospitals; six of those were in intensive care. One firefighter was transported to another hospital complaining of chest pains.
Officials said the fire was confined to an outpatient orthopedic section. Dickson City Fire Department reported the fire started on the roof of the hospital’s original building — formerly Scranton Orthopedics — which is attached to the newer Lehigh Valley facility. Flames were visible as crews arrived, and fire officials later described the orthopedic unit as a total loss.
There was no active fire inside the main hospital building, though that structure suffered smoke and water damage. Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the state Department of Health responded to the scene. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal has opened an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
Gov. Josh Shapiro posted thanks to first responders on social media and said he and his wife were praying for hospital staff, patients, families and the community. Dickson City is located about six miles north of Scranton.
