Feb. 5, 2026 — A police helicopter crashed Wednesday night near the scene of what authorities described as an “active officer-involved shooting investigation” in the Flagstaff area, according to Page, Arizona, police.
Page police said the suspect in the incident was taken into custody. Investigators told CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV that no officers were hurt in the shooting. Officials have not released details about how many people were aboard the helicopter or their conditions; KPHO reported the aircraft belonged to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Local resident Amanda Brewer told the station she first heard three gunshots shortly before 8:40 p.m. local time, followed by two more, and called 911. She said officers arrived within minutes and that the shooting continued: “I heard between 15 and 20 gunshots,” she said.
Brewer said she later heard a helicopter over her house just after 10 p.m., then a loud crash that shook her home. “You could hear the blades going,” she recalled. “Then there was a very large crash; it shook the house. It was startling.”
She described a large fire in the forest behind her house and said she heard additional gunfire after the crash.
Flagstaff police posted on social media that they had issued a shelter-in-place order for one neighborhood at about 10:15 p.m. The department has not provided details about what led to the officer-involved shooting or the condition of the suspect, KPHO reported.
CBS News reported the initial details; local authorities continue to investigate.
