Virginia State Police say a road rage incident on Interstate 495 southbound near exit 52 in Annandale on Sunday left a 39-year-old woman and a dog dead and three other women seriously injured.
State police were dispatched about 1:20 p.m. after reports of a road rage confrontation. Officers say the stabbings followed a crash on the highway. When a trooper arrived, he encountered a male suspect armed with a knife.
Authorities identified the suspect as 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean, Virginia. A state trooper shot Llamado, whom police described as threatening; he was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and later died. The shooting was described by authorities as an act of self-defense.
The three other stabbing victims are women ages 36, 37 and 40; all were hospitalized with serious injuries. The trooper who fired has been placed on leave while the incident is investigated.
State police say the episode is under investigation and is not believed to be related to terrorism. CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported the crash and police response caused major delays on the beltway for nearly six hours; the roadway has since been reopened.
