The U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil lawsuit Friday against Fulton County, Georgia, seeking records from the 2020 general election, the latest action by the administration to review aspects of that contest.
According to the complaint, the DOJ’s Civil Division requests materials including ballot stubs and signature envelopes. The suit states that Attorney General Pam Bondi is investigating Fulton County’s compliance with federal election law.
Justice Department officials say they sent a records request in November to the Fulton County clerk, but received no response, prompting the lawsuit.
President Donald Trump has continued to assert that he won the 2020 election, including the contest in Georgia, which was won by Joe Biden. Trump and 18 others were previously indicted in Fulton County over alleged efforts to overturn the election results; Trump pleaded not guilty, and charges against all defendants were dismissed last month.
When asked for comment by ABC News, the Fulton County clerk’s office issued a brief statement: “The Office of the Clerk of Superior and Magistrate Courts is not at liberty to comment on pending litigation.”
