At least five people were injured Thursday in a possible stabbing at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington, officials said.
Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Shelbie Boyd said the incident was reported a little after 1:30 p.m. Officers responding to a call about a possible stabbing or altercation found four wounded students and an injured campus security officer. Boyd said all five victims and the suspect had been stabbed or cut.
The suspect, a student, was detained at the scene. All five victims and the suspect were taken to area hospitals; initial conditions were unclear. Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd said four patients were in critical condition and one had minor injuries. Shepherd later said all six people transported were reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, a juvenile, was charged with five counts of first-degree assault, Boyd said. Detectives and forensics personnel remained on campus as investigators worked to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.
The school was placed on lockdown, and police directed parents to pick up students in the school parking lot. Classes were canceled Friday; the district said the campus will reopen Monday with counselors and additional administrative staff available to support students and employees.
Tacoma is about 30 miles south of Seattle.
