Pinterest said it will reduce its workforce by up to 15% this year to reallocate resources toward expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities. In a regulatory filing, the company said the reduction will affect “less than 15% of the company’s workforce” and will also include cuts to office space.
The company told investors the moves are intended to free cash for AI-focused roles and teams, AI-powered products, and to accelerate its sales operations. A Pinterest spokesperson said the company is “making organizational changes to further deliver on our AI-forward strategy, which includes hiring AI-proficient talent,” and acknowledged that it had “made the difficult decision to say goodbye to some of our team members.”
Founded in 2008, Pinterest offers a platform where users discover and save recipes, décor ideas and other content, and shop for products. According to FactSet, the company has about 4,666 employees.
Pinterest expects the restructuring to be completed by Sept. 30, 2026, and said it will incur pre-tax charges of roughly $35 million to $45 million related to the changes.
Pinterest is one of several companies citing AI as a reason for recent layoffs. Earlier this week, Nike announced plans to cut about 775 jobs as it seeks to streamline operations and accelerate the use of advanced technology and automation.
