Updated April 18, 2026 — A skydiver struck the Lane Stadium scoreboard just before Virginia Tech’s spring football game on Saturday, prompting a delay while first responders reached him.
Virginia Tech posted on X that the jumper “was safely secured and is currently stable” after crews brought him down. The university said its priority remains the individual’s well-being and expressed gratitude to Blacksburg and Virginia Tech first responders, event staff and medical personnel for their swift, coordinated response.
Video of the incident showed the parachute settling on top of the scoreboard, between the letters “C” and “H” in the Virginia Tech lettering, before rescuers retrieved the skydiver. Authorities have not released the person’s name.
Photographs and reports indicate high winds pushed the paratrooper into the jumbotron prior to kickoff. CBS News has contacted the Blacksburg Fire Department for additional details.
