Beware of Phishing Scams Targeting TikTok Shop Shoppers

A recent Surfshark report highlights a significant rise in phishing scams mimicking TikTok Shop. Learn how to protect yourself while shopping online.

Escalation of Phishing Attacks

As the online shopping season approaches, users of TikTok Shop should exercise caution. A new report from Surfshark indicates that a fake TikTok Shop has been responsible for a considerable surge in phishing attempts, accounting for a large share of cyber threats.

Between May and September 2026, incidences of phishing addresses increased dramatically, with the number of blocked phishing attempts rising from approximately 104,962 to 655,024 monthly—a staggering 524% increase. The counterfeit TikTok Shop was particularly alarming, resulting in over 320,000 blocks, which constitutes nearly 19% of all global phishing incidents recorded during that time.

Current Status of the Fraudulent Domain

Despite efforts to combat these threats, the fraudulent TikTok Shop continues to be active. Surfshark's data indicates that even in October, it maintained its position as the most blocked phishing domain, being responsible for 18% of all phishing blocks in the early part of the month. This continuation of the scam during a peak shopping period raises serious concerns for consumers.

Tips for Safe Shopping on TikTok Shop

To ensure a secure shopping experience, especially during high-traffic periods like Black Friday, TikTok Shop users should embrace the following safety measures:

  • Verify the Domain: Always check that the website you are using is the official TikTok Shop. Look for signs of a secure connection, such as HTTPS in the URL.
  • Be Aware of Phishing Clues: Stay vigilant for unusual web addresses, grammatical errors, or poor visual design that might indicate a fraudulent site.
  • Evaluate Seller Reputations: Before finalizing a purchase, review seller ratings and feedback from previous buyers to ensure the reliability of the vendor.
  • Confirm Payment Recipients: Make sure that payments are processed through verified TikTok sellers only. If in doubt, reach out to TikTok Shop support for guidance.
  • Avoid Suspicious Links: Refrain from clicking on links that try to redirect you away from TikTok Shop; always navigate through the official app or website.
  • Limit Information Sharing: Do not engage with sellers outside the platform or share personal details that could jeopardize your security.
  • Be Cautious With Requests: Remember, TikTok Shop will never solicit personal information through unauthorized channels.

By adhering to these guidelines, users can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to scams and enjoy a safer online shopping experience. As content creators and shoppers increasingly turn to platforms like TikTok for commerce, it becomes crucial to remain informed and alert against evolving cyber threats.
