European Skies Disrupted by Series of Bomb Threats to Airlines
A series of bomb threats across Europe have led to significant disruptions for multiple airlines, prompting emergency landings and heightened airport security.
LONDON — A significant security scare unfolded on Thursday as a wave of bomb threats against European airliners sent shockwaves through major airports and into the skies above. This troubling situation has affected at least 14 flights, resulting in emergency landings and extensive security checks, although authorities have confirmed that no explosives have been discovered following these threats.
Accessing the Threats
Among the most notable incidents was Aer Lingus Flight EI402, which diverted from its Dublin to Rome route near Paris, landing at a French air force base. The 157 passengers aboard were safely evacuated before bomb squad teams conducted inspections. The email threats that mentioned the flights arriving in Rome expressed opposition to “your feminist regime,” likely alluding to Italy’s conservative Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
Heightened Security Across Europe
The surge in threats caused security protocols to escalate in several cities including Prague, Copenhagen, and Warsaw. Here, police and military personnel, complete with sniffer dogs, patrolled the tarmac. “It’s premature to make connections between the reported incidents,” stated Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, during a news briefing in Brussels.
Reassurances from Authorities and Airlines
British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander appealed for public composure, affirming that well-established procedures are in place for addressing both bona fide threats and hoaxes. “Many of the claims we see are unfounded,” she noted in an interview with Sky News. This sentiment was echoed by various airlines, including Finnair, whose flight from Helsinki to Rome had to be escorted by Italian air force jets after receiving an anonymous bomb threat. Like others, it was cleared without incident.
Further disruptions were reported by LOT Polish Airlines with two of its flights from Warsaw impacted — one bound for Brussels and another for Paris. Travelers witnessed increased security as military personnel responded to the situation. Ryanair also faced challenges, with three of its flights heading to Sofia experiencing interruptions due to the threats.
Other Affected Flights and Insights
Romania’s intelligence services reported bomb threats against a KLM flight to Tel Aviv that had a layover in Bucharest. Additionally, in Spain, three bomb threats were quickly reported via email related to Air Europa flights. These triggered prompt inspections and a temporary grounding of diverted aircraft.
Experts are now beginning to analyze the motives behind these threats. Peter Neumann, a security studies professor at King’s College London, emphasized the necessity for a more defined system to assess the credibility of such alarms, distinguishing between viable threats and those that are clearly hoaxes. “A clearer process can help manage the response and expectations of the public,” he stated.
Recurring Incidents and Ongoing Investigations
This wave of threats follows a series of similar incidents over the past week, where numerous flights were forced to divert or be grounded under similar pretenses, without the discovery of any explosive devices. Just days ago, a bomb scare also emerged on a cruise ship in Greece, further highlighting the persistent security challenges that European transportation systems face.
As authorities continue their investigations, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the bomb threats, leaving the public and officials puzzled and anxious over the situation.
