Philadelphia's Election Day Preparations Underway

As Election Day nears, Philadelphia officials ramp up efforts to ensure a smooth voting process amid scrutiny.

As Philadelphia gears up for the upcoming elections, the stakes are high with over 12 million votes already cast across the country, including approximately 65,000 in the city. Philadelphia, a pivotal player in the presidential battleground, has faced scrutiny regarding its voting procedures, particularly from former President Trump who has criticized the city over the past decade.

Behind the Scenes at Election HQ

At a bustling warehouse located in Northeast Philadelphia, city workers are diligently preparing the materials necessary for the election. Lisa Deeley, one of the city’s election commissioners, highlighted the importance of being organized. "These election activity boxes are essential as they contain all the supplies needed for each of the city's voting divisions," she said.

Each box includes vital items such as poll books, rule books, and other equipment needed at the 1,700 polling places. The city commissioners, consisting of two Democrats and one Republican, emphasize that their role is nonpartisan. Commission Chair Omar Sabir shared his confidence, stating, "We are born ready for this election."

Political Pressure and Public Trust

The shadow of political pressure looms over Philadelphia’s election processes, intensified by Trump's frequent targeting of the city. Since his campaign in 2016, Trump has repeatedly called out Philadelphia, labeling it a hotbed for political corruption. After the 2020 election, he claimed there was "massive cheating" in the city, raising concerns among election officials.

Deeley and her colleague, Seth Bluestein, have faced personal attacks as a result of this rhetoric. "We've received threats and harassment due to the ongoing claims made against our election process," Deeley noted. In light of ongoing skepticism, Bluestein asserted, "Our election system operates on American values, not partisan values. We are here to uphold democracy."

The Challenge of Mail-in Voting

The discourse around mail-in voting has heightened as Trump and some of his supporters continue to assert that this method is prone to fraud. However, Deeley insists that mail-in voting is a safe and reliable option, stating, "There might be isolated incidents of fraud, but nothing of significant scale." "Worrying about unfounded allegations surrounding mail ballots creates a dangerous narrative, impacting the public’s confidence in the democratic process." The counting process is also a significant concern. Due to Pennsylvania state laws, counting can't begin until Election Day when the polls open. This means that the long process of verifying and processing mail-in ballots could stretch well into the days following the election. They previously dealt with around 375,000 mail-in ballots during the last election, with the count extending well into the weekend.

Looking Ahead: Community Involvement and Future Elections

Philadelphia's election officials are also focused on future elections and how to enhance public trust in the electoral process. With calls for community volunteers, Shanna Fields, who manages the training of poll workers, emphasized the need for engaged citizens. "We rely heavily on volunteers who care about democracy to help carry out these elections efficiently. We always need more hands on deck!"

The city has already received some mail-in ballots and looks forward to processing them securely. Officials hope to finalize the counting by Wednesday afternoon, but they remain cautious about political pressures and outside interventions that could arise.

Despite these challenges, Bluestein expressed confidence, saying, "The integrity of our elections is our top priority, and we have systems in place to ensure smooth operations." The goal is to foster trust and transparency, enabling voters to feel confident in the democratic process.

As Election Day approaches, officials are on high alert and prepared for various scenarios, ensuring that voters can participate in a secure and thorough voting experience. The work of the Philadelphia City Commissioners continues, not just for the upcoming elections, but to lay the groundwork for future democratic undertakings in the city.
