Spotify Tightens Family Plan Rules with QR Code Verification

Spotify's co-CEO reveals new QR code method to verify Family Plan users, ensuring they live together.

New Verification Method Introduced

In a recent earnings call, Spotify’s co-CEO Alex Norström shared that the streaming giant is strengthening its verification process for users on the Family Plan. This initiative aims to confirm that all participants genuinely reside at the same address. The company is using a QR code system that needs to be scanned from the plan manager's device, creating a unique challenge for those participating in shared plans.

Ongoing Efforts to Improve Verification

Norström downplayed this change as merely a “routine improvement,” emphasizing the Family Plan’s long-standing presence in the company's offerings. “The Family Plan has been part of Spotify for nearly 13 years and constitutes a large segment of our subscriber base,” he noted. He further explained the necessity of continually enhancing verification methods to adapt to evolving user behaviors.

A Creative Challenge for Users

As part of the new system, the QR code refreshes frequently, which may prompt some users to think outside the box to keep their shared Premium subscriptions active. If someone fails to scan the code within a seven-day period, they face the consequence of being locked out from joining any other Family or Duo plans for a year.

This recent adjustment follows Spotify's history of limiting Family Plan sharing to those living under one roof, ensuring that the service is utilized as intended. The changes do not signal a finite deadline; rather, they represent ongoing adaptations aimed at maintaining the integrity of the Family Plan structure.
